Historical Meaning (OED)
The word “capitalism” emerged in English during the 19th-century Industrial Revolution, with OED citations dating back to the 1830s.
Historically, the underlying practices—private ownership of productive property, voluntary exchange, investment, entrepreneurship, and market prices—predated the word itself. Adam Smith detailed market mechanisms without using “capitalism” as his organizing label. Early usage of the word often carried critical overtones regarding the power of capital owners.
