Historical Meaning (OED)
Historically, “freedom” meant the condition of being free rather than subject to another’s control—especially freedom from bondage, slavery, arbitrary power, or coercion.
Originating from Old English frēodōm (from frēo, "free" + -dōm, "state or condition"), its earliest uses centered on who controls your choices: whether you are able to direct your own life rather than being owned, commanded, imprisoned, or arbitrarily restrained.
